I'm astonished that the "split media" case is causing problems for you. In Debian we solve the problem for CD/DVD media by simply grabbing the package files to a local cache and then installing them that way.

Cool testing!, I hope to have a play with your patch over the next couple of weeks :-)

Am I missing something?, I pulled the initrd from the F15 install dvd and get the following results:

[david@drlaptop ~]$ xz -l initrd.img
Strms Blocks Compressed Uncompressed Ratio Check Filename
1 1 93.8 MiB 351.8 MiB 0.267 CRC32 initrd.img

So, assuming that decompressed the inird is 351.8M, I can't see how this isn't the same footprint in RAM, and not ~140M

Well, I'm not really interested in removing or disabling SELinux. It's a key security feature of Fedora and has been for a long time now. What I am interested in doing is fixing code where possible to make what we've got work better.

We should really consider disabling SELinux by default, seeing how much memory it eats! (I'm pretty sure the baseline would also drop by a bit by not having the SELinux stuff loaded, but most importantly the huge spikes I and J would go away.)

Why is SELinux always being treated like a holy cow? It's one of the first things I disable on a fresh Fedora installation anyway!

I really enjoyed reading those weekly articles, but it seems like you have stopped for quite some time. :(

Anaconda has always been this remote beast from fairy tales to me, so it was great to be able to follow what happened with its development and where it was heading. It made me feel like I was getting to know Anaconda a bit better.

I suppose it took too much time to write those weekly entries?

Thanks anyway for having tried. :)

Hello there. Regarding Anaconda updates after release, I'll gladly help out test new builds if necessary. I actually just recently made a stripped down "pungi" installation image with updated packages. So if its feasible to update Anaconda in case new behavior is introduced in the needed packages it would be very nice in my opinion.
We already do have a package set that's larger than the DVD - the Everything spin of Fedora. We just don't make media for it. Now for the regular Fedora spin, it is my hope that we can think of alternate distribution mechanisms once it gets too large. Either we trim some of the crud out of the default spin, or we start pushing network installs more, or we start pushing live CDs more.

I really think we can find a suitable delivery mechanism to meet all use cases without having split media.

I do not really like the idea of killing split media support from Anaconda. But I do not like the idea of copying the packages to a local cache and installing afterwards.
I wonder why the mentioned problems cannot be solved. Considering that the whole repodata is available in the first media (CD/DVD #1), you should be able to query about possible file conflicts (as the file list is available in repodata) and also, as apparently yum can tell about the required disk space after a transaction, you can simulate a full transaction and find out the total required space (if it doesn't need the packages themselves).

For the second problem, I always thought that the packages are distributed in different media's considering their dependencies (so that packages in the 1st media does not depend on packages in other discs, and packages in the 2nd disc depend on 1st and 2nd disc packages only, and so on). If the distribution of packages in different discs are based on package dependencies, and the dependencies are correct (e.g. a package must depend on any package that is needed to run it's post installation scripts), then the second problem should go away without the need to hardcode a list of package names.

I wonder if I'm missing something here...
